What is half coupling?

  Half couplings are used for small-bore branches from vessels or large-bore pipes. It can be threaded or socketed. It only has a socket or threaded half-coupling end on one side. Half couplings socket welded can be welded directly to large diameter pipes to form branch connections.
It removes small-diameter pipe branches from large-diameter pipes where the pipe specification requires small-diameter socket welding. The threaded half coupling has only one threaded end, and the other end of the half coupling should be the butt-welded end of the flat or beveled end.
Half Coupling halves are widely used in the aerospace industry as connectors for pressurized fuel lines. Launches of various space shuttles are often delayed because aluminum half couplings require closer inspection for safety reasons.

Function

Hoses are readily identifiable objects that connect using a aluminum half coupling. The threaded end is screwed onto a faucet, while the other end is clamped onto the hose. With piping, one end of a half-coupling is screwed onto the pipe, while the other end is made to be tightly inserted, or welded, onto the other end.

Half Coupling Types

Half Coupling Installation

This threaded NPT HALF coupling is typically what you’d have welded into your vessel as the bulkhead for thread in sight glasses, dial thermometers, etc. The half coupling gives you female threads on ONLY ONE END. An alternative to a half coupling would be a weld spud, especially if you plan to use silver solder rather than welding.

Available in 1/2″ and 1/4″ NPT sizes.

Made from cast 304 stainless steel. Note that the outside finish on these is typically MATTE or cast finish meaning that it has not been machined to shiny.

The 1/2″ half couplings measure approximately 1.06″ outside diameter.
The 1/4″ half couplings measure approximately .75″ outside diameter.

It’s always best to measure them in person if you’re trying to have them fit snug in a drilled hole for welding.
