This threaded NPT HALF coupling is typically what you’d have welded into your vessel as the bulkhead for thread in sight glasses, dial thermometers, etc. The half coupling gives you female threads on ONLY ONE END. An alternative to a half coupling would be a weld spud, especially if you plan to use silver solder rather than welding.

Available in 1/2″ and 1/4″ NPT sizes.

Made from cast 304 stainless steel. Note that the outside finish on these is typically MATTE or cast finish meaning that it has not been machined to shiny.

The 1/2″ couplings measure approximately 1.06″ outside diameter.
The 1/4″ couplings measure approximately .75″ outside diameter.

It’s always best to measure them in person if you’re trying to have them fit snug in a drilled hole for welding.

Half Coupling

Half Coupling is used for small bore branching from a vessel or large bore pipe. It can be threaded or socket type. It has a socket or thread end on only one side.

socket weld half coupling can be directly welded to a large bore pipe, to make a branch connection. It is used to take a small bore pipe branch-off from a large bore pipe where the pipe spec requirement is socket weld in small bore size. A threaded half coupling only has one thread end and another end of the coupling should be a butt welding end with either a plain end or a bevel end.

Couplings can be divided into rigid couplings and flexible couplings. 1. Rigid coupling. Rigid coupling does not have the ability to buffer and compensate the relative displacement of the two shafts, so the two shafts are required to be strictly aligned. However, this coupling has the advantages of simple structure, low manufacturing cost, convenient assembly and disassembly, convenient maintenance, high alignment of two axes, large transmission torque, and wide application range. Commonly used are flange couplings, sleeve couplings and shell couplings. 2. Elastic coupling. Elastic couplings can be divided into elastic couplings with no elastic elements and elastic couplings with elastic elements.

The former only has the ability to compensate the relative displacement of the two axes, but cannot buffer and reduce vibration. Common ones are slider couplings, gear couplings, universal couplings and chain couplings; the latter contains elastic elements, which not only have the ability to compensate for the relative displacement of the two shafts, but also have buffering and damping effects. However, due to the limitation of the strength of the elastic element, the transmission torque is generally not as good as that of the elastic coupling without the elastic element.
